The holiday post.

This is my obligitory Merry Christmas blog entry.  My wife's family is coming in to visit, I have one day off, and various places to visit.  Can't make it home this year because it is so far and I only have Christmas day off, so that is a bummer.

On the comics front.  I am very close to finishing issue 9, so I hope to be finished and have it ordered by the end of January (there, I said a deadline.  Now I have to make it).  Been putting a lot of time into directing a children's play, but it has been very rewarding so far.

Here is a link to one of my favorite Christmas songs, if you don't know it then enjoy.

crowd shot

Here is a pic that depicts a lot (but not all) characters from iNTERMEZZO.  How many can you name?  200 geek points to whoever can name the most.

Charlotte Comicon Post show

Finished my last convention of the year, and had a good show.  This show was well done, well attended, and a lot of fun.  Rick Fortenberry's show is getting bigger and better, and that venue was great.  I don't know if they will continue to use that space or not, but I liked it a lot.

I met some people, and saw some people I have on facebook from previous shows. Overall it was just a good day.   A road trip to Charlotte is always a long one, but I had a friend of mine Jeff who set up a dealer table to travel with, and we crashed at my Mom's place who lives an hour away from Charlotte, so it all worked out quite well.

But today means back to work.  Vacation is over.

Charlotte Comicon

Dec 16th is my next convention.  I have attended this show in Charlotte many times.  Rick Fortenberry puts on a great show and has a lot of artists in attendance.  I missed his last show because of work, and it was moved to a new location.  When I see the list of dealers set up at this show, it seems huge, like it has possibly doubled.  It sounds like this change of venue, is the first step of this show really expanding and growing.  It couldn't happen to a better show, I always enjoy going and my main goal is trying to make more money than I spend (a goal which I usually fail).

I will definitely be there, my friend Jeff is set up as a dealer so we will be driving down together.  I have my homeless superhero sketches, lots of copies of iNTERMEZZO 1-8, Dyslexic Cosmic, and my Geek things print which has shown to be pretty popular.

It also falls on the last day of my vacation, which is a good way to finish.  Several days off, hanging with my wife.  Celebrating our 18th anniversary, working on iNTERMEZZO issue 9, and then a comic book convention.  That is a perfect vacation for me.

Vacation!

I have one more day of work on Sunday, then I have my week's vacation.  I am really jonesing for this, I have several ideas that are jockying for position to get done first.  Issue 9 is very close to being done and Huh the Cosmic Polar Bear kicks his story up a notch, that uses artwork created almost 10 years ago.  So that is cool (for me at least) to see the two styles side by side.

Dyslexic Cosmic 2 is underway and the end is close (close enough to distract me from #9).

And a new story is written and I hope to start on art soon, but I want to finish those two first.  And then there is an art print that I want to start, a prose story that has piqued my interest, and a board game (yes a board game).  That's not even all of them.  Throw in the fact that I am directing a children's theatre production of School House Rock Live Too!  and I have a lot of things I would like to spend my time doing.

Disappointing show

So the Raliegh show was a bit of a dud.  The people there were fine, you're average assortment, but there were very few of them there.  Turnout was very disappointing for a Raliegh show.  All of the other dealers around, I was the only artist set up, were talking about how slow the day was too.  It was so slow in the afternoon that the dealers would just yell conversations across the room to each other.

But... I've been to disappointing shows before.  It is after a good streak of satisfying shows this year. I haven't made it to many this year, but they have been good.  I hope to continue the good streak, one more show in Charlotte on Dec 16th and it is almost always a good one.  The Charlotte comicon has even moved to a new location, which is good because they have been very crowded the last few times.

As always "Any day at a comic convention > Any day at work"

Comic book show in Raleigh

Have a convention in Raleigh this Sunday (Dec 2nd), and recommend the show.  It is a great room to find stuff to read or collect.  A well balanced show.  I have done it a few times, it is near home so that is good, and it is always a good day (of cource ANY day at a comic book show > a good day at work).

Been working on some stories and comics (with time off for thanksgiving dinner).  I hope to have issue 9 done soon and 2 other projects to follow quickly.  It keeps iNTERMEZZO moving forward while letting some other ideas out to play.

Post NC Cmicon post

Had a great time in Durham for the NC Comicon.  My best show to date in fact.  There were 4500 people in attendance, that place was crowded!  This was the first time I ever heard a convention announcement saying the room was at capacity, there was a line outside and they couldn't get in until some people left.  Met a lot of people, sold some stuff, and just in general had a great time.  It was so busy the entire time, it was a bit tiring, but definitely worth it.  I hope this is an indicator of how well  this show will grow in the future.

NC Comicon

Going to be at NC Comicon this weekend (Nov 17 and 18) and really looking forward to it.  I will be set up with Stacy (Leather Mischief, masks and stuff) and Jason (sculptures, some steam punk stuff).

I have new issues, number 8 which is a big turning point in the story of iNTERMEZZO, a new print that people seem to really like and lots of homeless hero sketches.

Always remember...

Day at a Comic Book Convention > Day at work

So for this show, if you meet me and say the magic phrase "Meanwhile, back at the ranch" you win a prize.

Good Weekend

Got back from Roanoke VA last night, it is the first time I didn't rush back after the show.  Wendy and I got to hang out with friends there and relax, and it was wonderful.  Not only that but the Roanoke Valley Comicon was the best one day show for me ever.  Money is a good thing, but it was also seeing some people I've met before and meeting some new people, had some interesting discussions and talking about ideas.  This weekend was just relaxing, inspiring, and a great escape.

Roanoke Roadtrip

Going to Roanoke VA tonight for a comic book convention in the Salem Civic Center Sat Nov 3rd.  This is one of the best one day shows around; crowds are good size and interesting to talk with, a good mix of readers and collectors, and a good size room with a lot of dealers and artists that are a good group to talk with.

On a personal note I will be spending time for the next couple of months directing a children's theatre production.  I spent almost 7 years as their Technical Director and helping out an ailing director by directing this show.  It is Schoolhouse Rock Live, an integral part of my childhood so I am looking forward to the show and working with the kids.  In honor of that, anyone who comes up to my table and says the magic phrase... "Darn, that's the End" will get a prize.

Comic Book Stuff (NO! REALLY?)

Got a comic book show in Roanoke Saturday, Nov 3rd.  Very much looking forward to this, because it is one of my favorite shows.  I always do well and I get to stay with some friends who live there.  Making a weekend of it with my wife and good friends, which is great because I usually have to rush home to work.  Work is... let's not get into that.

Found this podcast interview with me.  Me?  Yeah, who knew?  These are some funny people, I appreciate their time.

I am working on Issue 9, which is going pretty well, and I am very close to completing Dyslexic Cosmic 2.  I feel like I have so many ideas fighting for position, it is hard to pick something to work on.

Comic Show in Raleigh

I had a comic book show in Raleigh last weekend and had a very good day.  I am hoping to make more shows this fall, to make up for the shows I missed because of my work schedule.

There is another show scheduled for Wilson, NC.  We are trying to build a local following for a comic show here.  I hope it takes off and we get more people to try it out.
The next ones I definitely have is the Roanoke show in early Nov and Durham in mid Nov.  But still looking.  It feels good to think I will get back to more shows, I have really missed it.

NCComicon

Has a list of their artist alley and Bear Butt Comics is first on the list.  I don't even care that it is alphabetical, I still think it is cool.

WAX

WAX (Wilson Artist Expo) is tomorrow in Wilson, NC.  I am looking forward to doing a con, because I have not done one since May.  This one is also in my town so there isn't any long drive.  Also looking to do some "Geek Olympic" events that may be fun, so look out for that.

Anyone who says the phrase "The Bear Butt has landed" gets a prize.

I am revealing some new things that I am excited about, a new backdrop that looks way cool and shows a LOT of iNTERMEZZO characters and a new print that i just love.

ISSUE 7

Issue 7 arrived in the mail and I am blown away with how good it looks!  The new scanner that allows me to scan directly from my 11x17 art instead of xeroxing it down and then scanning from that makes a huge improvement.  So much so that I plan on rescanning all issues when I can so that all of them will look this good.

ISSUE 7 IS AVAILABLE NOW!

Issue 7 is FINALLY available on Indyplanet (my delays, not theirs.  I'm not blaming them).  Go check it out (and order lots of copies).  YAY!

Myrtle beach has come and gone, a couple of ok days and 1 bad one, but a fun time meating a lot of good people.  Hoping to add some shows soon, we'll see how that goes.

AT LAST!

Issue 7 is off to Ka-Blam (the printer)!  After a new computer, a new scanner, a new computer program, and 7 hours with Geek Squad getting all of them to work together it is finished and ordered!  Exhale...

One of my favorite covers.

So I obviously feel a lot better about this, and just about all of it in general.  My last post was very pessimistic and I needed to bolow off some steam.

I also have a spot at XCon in Myrtle Beach Fl for a three day show in May.  Since I can't be at Heroescon this year because of my work schedule, this is a welcome addition.  Its a new area for me and I've heard a lot of good things about this show.

Disappointment

I have needed to post for quite a while, but haven't because I wanted to be able to post that issue 7 had been sent to Ka-Blam for printing. The reason I can't say that is that it is not true. Once again I cannot get this done and I am royally pissed! I bought a new scanner and photoshop program to work with the new computer and once again I can't get it together! They won't work together or talk to each other, and it will freeze entirely. One problem always leads to another.

I am feeling about as low as I have in the three years since I started publishing Bear Butt Comics. I wonder if I should just give up. I am obviously not good at this, nobody fucking cares about this but me. Its not like anyone even reads this anyway.

All I wanted to to tell my little stories, draw some pictures, and put it into a format that I have loved my entire life. The fact that I am unable to do what should be a simple thing is just screaming at me that I need to just quit.

Who am I kidding?
