Post Nc Comicon Post

Had a pretty good show and really fun weekend.  Friday was slow but the rest of the weekend picked up well.  Saw some friends I haven't seen in many years.  Now I am relaxing, drawing some ideas I had while sitting behind a table at the con.  Lots of creative juices flowing.

I also was interviewed on NC Comicon's podcast.  Anybody know how I can find that?

So, this weekend is NC Comicon. Friday morning I am setting up for the three day show. Hope to see a lot of friends there.

a cool random page from Intermezzo 13.

This weekend...

I got nothing.  I am going nowhere.  I am staying at home and relaxing with Wendy, but no road trips, no cons, nowhere to be.

But I'll still draw something, let's not get crazy.

Sketch Cover commission.

A sketch cover commission that I was given to do at the Roanoke Valley Comicon.  He asked me to dray Mary Jane Watson tearing off a symbiote.  I added the bell to tie in to the original story.  He seemed very pleased.  I was happy with it.

I am always available for regular commissions, as well as sketch covers.

Road trip to Roanoke

Had a good show on Saturday.  It started out fantastic and then cooled off to just good.  Still well worth the trip and I had a good time.

I have started to prepare for my next show which is NCComicon, which is a 3 day event starting on Nov 11th.  This gives me lots of time to prepare.  That is a big show and always an exhausting, but fun time.

Roanoke, VA

I am attending the Roanoke Valley Comicon tomorrow, Oct 22.  I've been doing their show for years, but its been a while since I could make it to one.  Lots of new stuff and some fun new sketches.

Hope to see a lot of people and get some comics to some people who would enjoy them.  And if I am lucky, I will make more than I spend (cause I love finding cool stuff).

Fayetteville comicon

Haven't posted lately and a lot has happened.  In particular, a hurricane.  After a nice relaxing vacation with the wife, we came home in time for Hurricane Matthew.
It caused a lot of damage and flooding, but we were very lucky and didn't have anything major.  We know some friends who had significant issues, and there are building about 2 miles from our house that were completely flooded out.

While waiting for things to normalize, Fayetteville Comicon went on this past weekend.  I think it was a nice diversion, Fayetteville was hit hard too.  Others seemed to have the same idea, as attendance was very high.  It was a very good weekend for me, and I got to talk to friends for a couple of days while showing people my art and comics.  That's getting things back to normal for me.

Next stop Roanoke, VA.

Winston Salem Comicon

I attended the Winston Salem Comicon Saturday and had a fun day.  It was a little slow starting, but picked up as the day went.

A boy about 12 or 13 almost running up to my table said he was looking for me all over the place.  (that makes you feel important)  He's bought 3 comics from me at the last 2 conventions he went to, and was there to pick up the next 3.  That was way cool.

In the end I think that is all any artist can ask for.  For someone to give his work a try, and then to enjoy it enough to keep coming back for more.

Thanks to Burke St Comics for putting on another good show.
Next up is Hickory on 09/24.

Fatman The Human Flying Saucer

Fatman The Human Flying Saucer is a creation of Otto Binder and C.C. Beck, the creators of the original Captain Marvel.  It is a bizarre, wild, and wacky character.  They did 3 issues (that were about as thick as 3 issues each) back in 1967.  I have enjoyed doing some artwork of this fun character.  Next year is the character's 50th anniversary.  Should try to bring him back.

Been a while

Been taking some time between conventions working on a few commissions, and some other stuff.  I will be back in Winston Salem on Sept 3.

I've been trying to think of a way to get people to come see me at Jay and Eddie's Comic Book Show this weekend.  I think this might be it.

Heroescon 2016- the Post Show Post

Charlotte.  Heroescon.  Big.  Tired.  Good.

That just about covers it.

But really, always a good show to go and see and marvel at it all.  I had a good show, one of the best Heroescon's I've had.  And when the room is that big, and there is so much to see, it is hard to get noticed.  I am very appreciative to those who noticed me, and decided to buy a print or comic.

Heroescon is here!

Ok, it is not here yet, but it is this weekend (so if you're reading this and it is Friday June 17th, Saturday June 18th, or Sunday June 19th, then HEROESCON IS HERE!)

I have lots of new stuff.  Issue 13 of Intermezzo, and my new comic Quirkyworks #1.  I have several new prints, sketches and for the first time (for me at least) sketch cover comics.

Walk up to my table and say the secret phrase and win a prize.

That phrase is "Some people call me a Space Cowboy."

HEROESCON

Heroescon is this weekend.  I have new comics (Intermezzo issue 13 and QuirkyWorks #1), new prints (funny stuff), sketches, and for the first time I have sketch cover comics for sale.
Several of my artist friends have been recommending I give them a try and I have 3 completed for this weekend, turned out pretty good.

Looking forward to this one, its a biggie.

downtime

So, I haven't been to a comic book convention in a couple of weeks.  Been drawing , got QuirkyWorks off to the Printer.  That's a new comic, in a totally different direction.
To anyone who remembers the old Harvey Comics for kids, this is a parody/ updating/ reimagining of that genre.  Its at the printer now.
I think the humor is pretty accessible to anyone, especially kids.  It's features Vlad the Vegan Vampire, Zoe the Sensitive Zombie and others.  Just to try something completely different (and make room in my head by getting those ideas out there).

DJs at comic book conventions

I was at a comic book convention yesterday (What?  Really?  Who would've thought?).  This was a relatively small show in Greensboro, not that big of a space and not too many people there, but no big deal.  The issue I had with the show, was the DJ.

As everyone was setting up, the music was at a good level and everyone could talk.  But after the show started the room started to get louder (as they do when you get people talking and having a good time).  Then the DJ made the music louder so it could be heard over the crowd... so the crowd has to scream at each other to be heard... so the music had to go louder for it to be heard.

My wife and I were set next to the DJ, so we had to scream in each other's ear or text to communicate most of the day.  We had a comic collection to sell and that was pretty self explanatory, we had signs with the prices listed and price tags on anything special.  I couldn't explain my comic book to anyone, so while we did ok with the comics, I sold next to nothing from my artist stuff and I imagine it was no better for other artists.

Artists have to be able to speak to con-goers.  Answer questions, explain our work.  I was at the opposite side of the room and couldn't have a conversation because the music was so loud.  I personally do not see the need for DJs at a con, but they like for it to be a party atmosphere, so I understand why they do.  But the day will (hopefully) get to the point where the music will be overpowered by the noise of the convention.

It brings about a question that needs to be addressed before the show.  Do you want a comic book convention or a performance for your DJ?

I guess the third option is for me to be "that guy" who complains about it and get told I'm too old or no fun.  But I can listen to music anytime, I am at your event to promote my comic and artwork.

Oak City Comicon

I was in Raleigh for the Oak City Comicon yesterday with my good friend from Leather Mischief.  We both had really a good day, but never got much of a rest.  Big crowds, a lot of people looking at our stuff and a lot of people who liked it enough to make a purchase.  In a comicon, there is a lot of things for you to spend your money, so when people spend it on my art and comics I feel very grateful.

This was my best 1 day show yet.  In the past year I keep going to shows that set a new personal record.  I still have shows that I don't do well, but that is just part of the deal.

Next week I have another show that set a new record last year, Winston Salem Comicon.  So time to try for a new personal best.

Issue 13 is at Ka-blam being printed.  I should get it back by the middle of May.

Issue 13 (and my sanity)

Issue 13 is completed (for the second time) and successfully sent to Ka-Blam, the printer (for the first time).  I somewhat learned how to use the GIMP program and completed it today.  I doublechecked it all a couple of times and then sent it.

So, issue 13 is hopefully going to be printed soon and shipped to me mid-May.  I have a lot of other projects in mind, that I can move on to now.

blah blah funk blah blah blah

Making some progress with a new software called GIMP instead of Photoshop.  We could find the case for our photoshop disc and get it installed, so I am trying a new one.  Its taking a long time, but I am making headway.  With any luck I may finish issue 13 this week and get it ordered.

Saturday I will be in Lexington, my hometown for their third annual Lexing-con.  Really want to tell people the new issue is ordered.

Deep Blue Funk

Its been a while since I wrote anything, and honestly I don't feel like it now.  I completed issue 13, the files were ready to send to the printer, but I had an errand to run.  Loading the file and placing the order can take an hour so I left to do it when I got back.

When I got back the computer was trying to restart itself, it does that a lot.  It will take a few hours and then you can use it again.  But this time it never stopped, it tried to restart for days and then we took it in to get looked at.  Geek Squad reset the computer to factory settings, everything was lost.

We have a backup system, but I hadn't saved Issue 13 to the backup, only to the computer itself.  So Issue 13 is now gone.  I have to start over fixing the scans and prepping it.  Instead of moving on to the next project, I have to start this one over.

Not holding together well on this.  I also lost Photoshop and we can't get it reloaded.  I am trying a program called GIMP instead, but it is a lot different.  And I am not good with learning new programs (or programs I've used for a long time, or much of anything anymore).

I'm stumped.  I am trying, but it is taking a lot of effort to even try.

Issue 13 is finished!

Mostly... the pages are being scanned and sent to me.  My scanner has been the bane of my existence for years.  Now I have someone scan them and send them to me.  Once that is done and some minor tweeking then I can send issue 13 to the printer.  Very soon now.

More comics soon

Issue 13 is getting close.  I am currently inking page 21.

I am attending the VA Comicon this Saturday, Feb 6th.  My first convention in quite a while.  After that I have several in April, going to Lexington, Raleigh, and Winston Salem.

Looking for my latest comic fix.

Feb 6th

On February 6th I will be in Richmond at the next VA Comicon.  I've done this show before with mixed results, but I need a comic show.  And the show is well organized, and has a good crowd.  I'm optimistic that this will be a good start for me this year.  Planning other shows, more to come.
